A 58-year-old man was found dead in a van brought to the Payson Regional Medical Center Saturday afternoon.
The Payson Police Department was initially dispatched to the PRMC parking lot when the driver of the van, a woman, told emergency room staff that she believed her friend was dead.
Upon questioning officers determined that the man most likely died in the Strawberry area, and out of the jurisdiction of the Payson police.
The case was then turned over to the The Gila County Sheriff's Office.
PRMC staff told GCSO deputies that the man had been dead for some time
Officers cordoned off the area around the van because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the incident.
GCSO Sgt. Craig Smith said he cannot release any details of the death, including the identity of the deceased, due to the pending investigation.
"There are some suspicious elements to the case, but we are waiting for the results of an autopsy that will be done in Tucson," Smith said. "It is still under investigation."
