Katrina Dogs Offered For Fostering Sunday

There will be a Katrina dog fostering day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6 at Whispering Hope Ranch.

This is an opportunity for Rim Country residents to foster dogs that were separated from their owners during Hurricane Katrina.

Tara's Babies, a Buddhist nonprofit animal rescue organization, has been taking care of the dogs since their arrival in Arizona.

Eight to a dozen of the 60 dogs that are being cared for at the Buddhist sanctuary will be on site for foster parents to take to a warm, caring homes, said sanctuary caretaker Kunzang Drolma.

"If this fostering goes well, we will do it again," Drolma said.

The dogs are medium- and large-sized dogs of a variety of breeds. Nearly all are mixed breeds, with many Labrador, retriever, shepherd, chow, and terrier mixes. While some have been spayed or neutered, many have not.

To get to Whispering Hope Ranch, drive east on Highway 260 past the Christopher Creek turnoff to Colcord Road. Make a right turn and follow the road as it curves to the left. The turn for the ranch is located about 2.3 miles down Colcord on the right-hand side.
