Payson's observance of Veterans Day will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11 at the Payson High School Auditorium. The public is invited to attend the event, at which John and Luann Carpino will act jointly as master of ceremonies.
PHS drama students will assist in a segment of the program. Others participating will include Mayor Barbara Brewer and Misti DeCaire, who will present "Taps."
Commanders of the veterans organizations of Payson will be asked to briefly share their thoughts. The organizations participating are: Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, AMVETs Post I and the Marine Corps League Detachment.
The highlight of the program will be the presentation of a Gold Star Flag to Edith Owen, whose son, U.S. Army Spec. 4 John Owen, was killed July 3, 1970 in Vietnam. John was a resident of Payson whose family roots in the town extend back to 1951. His body was interred in Payson's Pioneer Cemetery and lies beside that of his father, Robert Owen, a World War II veteran.
"We must always remember that the focus is on our veterans, past, present and future," said Col. Bill Sahno, U.S. Marine Corps, retired, of the event. "Whomever comes to this observance will be representing them." Col. Sahno is chairman of the Payson Patriotic Events Committee.
