If you've never attended one of the monthly Sunday afternoon jazz concerts at Community Presbyterian Church, this may be the time to start. That's because Margo Reed is coming to Payson this weekend.
If the name doesn't ring a cymbal for you, try "Arizona Jazz Magazine Female Vocalist of the Year" and "Arizona Blues Hall of Fame" inductee. A member of a well-known performing family, Reed brings the essence of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith into her music.
Reed, who will perform in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13 at Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., has been a Valley jazz fixture for years, but has also appeared at major venues in San Diego, Seattle, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Atlanta, Detroit, Portland and Denver. Her first Phoenix gigs were at the legendary nightclub The Century Sky Room, followed by a long run at Phoenix's premier jazz club -- The Boojum Tree.
She currently appears Monday evenings at the Kazimierz Wine Bar in Old Town Scottsdale, where she has been joined by the likes of George Benson, Jessie McGuire and Dennis Roland.
Reed's Payson appearance is sponsored by Jazz in AZ. She will be accompanied by John Shea on piano, Ted Sistrunk on bass, and part-time Payson resident Gerry Reynolds on drums.
Reynolds is the president of Jazz in AZ, Inc., a nonprofit organization that stages a variety of concerts and events at Kerr Cultural Center, Scottsdale Center for the Arts, and other venues.
When he retired to Payson three years ago, he brought his passion for jazz with him. Eventually he linked up with other jazz fans and began staging the monthly concerts at the church.
The event is free, but donations are customary. For reservations, e-mail email@example.com or leave a message at (480) 785-1278.
