The fishing team of Clifford Pirch and Reese Randall know the nuances of tournament fishing well enough to not always depend on first place finish for big paydays.
The angling duo, who have been friends since their days at Payson High School, fished their way to a fourth-place showing at the AllStar Bass team tournament Nov. 5 at Roosevelt Lake.
The fourth place earned the two $2,900 in prize money while the third-place team, Mike Owsley of Happy Jack and Sam Hiatt of Phoenix, received just $750.
Pirch and Randall are able to earn more money than teams finishing higher in the standings by entering side contests among tournament fishermen.
The two also boated the tournament's big fish winner -- a 3.92-pound largemouth. Their six-bass limit tipped the scales at 9.60 pounds.
The tournament champs, Brian Daniels and Gary Senft, both of Phoenix, weighed in a limit of 13.51 pounds. In it was a 3.61 lunker that was just ounces shy of the big fish caught by Pirch and Randall.
The Payson team's fishing strategy throughout the fray was to fish crankbaits, jerkbaits, and Texas-rigged worms in five feet of water on points all around the lake.
The next AllStar Bass team tournament will be held Dec. 3 at Roosevelt Lake.
