Youthful Golfers Earning Notice

A trio of young, Rim Country golfers continue to show their wares on the Junior Golf Association of Arizona tournament trail.

Dean Harpe, Tyler Apps and Jordan Henderson all participated in the JGAA Fall Classic held Nov. 7 at The Lakes at Ahwatukee and Western Skies Golf Club in Gilbert.

Harpe, an 8-year-old, third-grader at Frontier Elementary School was at a disadvantage competing in the boys 10-and-under age division against opponents two-years older than he.

Nonetheless, he carded a 43 on the par 30 Ahwatukee nine-hole course to finish tied for seventh in the 17-player field.

Apps and Henderson, sixth- graders at Rim Country Middle School, competed in the boys 11-12 years age group also at The Lakes at Ahwatukee. Both posted tallies of 78 and were tied for seventh among the 28 entered.

Last summer, Apps's sterling play earned him plenty of recognition on the junior golf scene. At a PGA Southwest Section championship in Snowflake, he won the 10-year-old age division, carding a one-under-par 35.

Also in southwest section tournament action, at Pine Meadows in Heber, Apps turned in a 38, to finish first. The youngster won seven of the eight southwest section tournaments he played in.

Away from southwest play, at the Four Clubs Challenge at Mountain Shadows in Paradise Valley, Apps played his way to fifth place

He racked up additional honors July 5 and 6 at Riverview Golf Course in Mesa, where he copped a seventh-place showing.

Also at Riverview, in the 10-year-old age group, Harpe swung his way to ninth.

Harpe will return to JGAA action Nov. 20 at the Junior Parent Championships to be played at Painted Mountain course in Mesa. His partner will be his father, Tom.

Apps and Henderson have not yet entered the fray.
