Youth Football Having Stellar Season


The Payson Raiders made quick work of one of their long-time adversaries, whipping the Camp Verde Bulldogs 26-0.

The Central Arizona Youth Football win was chalked up Oct. 1 at Rumsey Park.


Central Arizona Youth Football action heats up Oct. 8 on the Payson High School football field where four games will be played.

Westin Gibson paced the Raiders with two touchdowns and Michael Shearer and Payson Herring had one each. Jake Sleeper and Herring scored two-point conversions.

Coach Billy Hardt cited the PHS Longhorns' homecoming victory over Fountain Hills as a catalyst to the Raiders win.

"The team watched the game and it really got them pumped up," he said.

Additional CAYFA games of the day featured the four other Payson teams battling one another.

The Buccaneers edged past the Broncos 12-6 and the Bears hog-tied the Cowboys 6-0.

In CAYFA East, Mighty Might standings, the Bears are 4-0 and in first place. The cellar-dwelling Cowboys are 0-3.

In the Major East standings, the Raiders are in first place, with a 4-0 record and have outscored their opponents by a whopping 121-30 margin.

In the past four seasons, the Raiders have lost just one game.

The Buccaneers are also 4-0 and lead the Minors East title chase. Also in the age/weight division, the Broncos are 2-2.

CAYFA action continues Oct. 8 on the Payson High School field with four of Payson's teams playing division counterparts representing Cottonwood.

At 9 a.m., the Broncos will host to the Colts and immediately after, about 11 a.m., the Buccaneers take on the Titans.

Action continues at 1 p.m., with the Cowboys and the Marauders hooking up.

Play wraps up at 3:30 p.m. with a meeting between the Bears and the Seahawks.

Spectators are welcome and there is no admission charge.
