Youth Football Teams Have Mixed Results


Payson's two Central Arizona Youth Football Association Mighty Might East region teams suffered the heartbreak of defeat Oct. 8 on Longhorn field. The Cottonwood Marauders nipped the Cowboys 14-12 and the Bears fell 22-14 to the Cottonwood Seahawks.

With the Bears' loss, the team fell to 4-1 on the season and into a tie with the 4-1 Seahawks for the lead in the region standings.


A Payson Cowboy running back can't break free from the tackle of a Cottonwood Marauder. Action took place Oct. 8 on PHS field. The Cowboys fell to 0-4 after being nipped 14-12 by the Marauders.

The Cowboys are 0-4 and tied with the winless Cottonwood Dolphins for last place in the league.

The Bears return to action at 11 a.m. Oct. 15 at Show Low High School against the White Mountain Lightning (2-2).

At 12:30 p.m., also at Show Low High School, the Cowboys play the White Mountain Thunder (2-1).

In CAYFA Minors East play Oct. 8, the Payson Buccaneers rode rough shod over the Cottonwood Titans 24-8 and the Payson Broncos lassoed the Cottonwood Colts 20-6.

The dominating Buccaneers, who are now atop the standings with a 5-0 record, have posted two shutouts and outscored their opponents by a whopping 116-20 margin.

The Broncos are tied for second place with the Cottonwood Titans. Both teams sport 3-2 records.

The Bucs return to the field at 9 a.m. Oct. 15 at Show Low High School against the White Mountain Minor Lightning (2-2).

At 2 p.m. on the SLHS field, the Broncos take on the White Mountain Minor Thunder (2-1).

Payson's entry in the CAYFA major region, the Raiders, had a bye Oct. 8, but will travel Oct. 15 to Chino Valley High School to play a 10 a.m. game against the home standing Trojans.

The Raiders sport a 4-0 record, have outscored their opponents 121-30 and are all alone in first place.
