Mystery Elk Sends Anonymous Message

As fund-raising efforts continue to place a larger-than-life bronze elk in the center of the roundabout at The Home Depot, an impatient Rim Country resident apparently took matters into his or her own hands last week.

Sometime Thursday night, an elaborately crafted though slightly undersized cardboard elk sporting a real rack was placed in the roundabout. It stayed there until sometime Saturday night when it left as mysteriously as it came.

This slightly less-than-life-size cardboard and wooden elk appeared Friday morning in the center of the roundabout on Highway 87.

Town Public Works Engineer LaRon Garrett, who investigated the elk Friday and reported it to the Arizona Department of Transportation, said ADOT was not involved in its removal.

"Since it was on their property, I did send them a picture of it," Garrett said. "But they don't work on weekends."

Garrett declined to speculate further.

"It just disappeared," he said. "I know no more than you do -- maybe less."

Checks to help put a "real" bronze elk in the roundabout should be made payable to Payson Gateway Project and mailed to P.O. Box 1525, Payson, AZ 85547. Contributions are tax deductible.
