The Payson High School cross country and girls soccer teams are primed and ready for postseason play. Both squads will be in action Oct. 28.
The cross country team travels to Lakeside where Blue Ridge High School will host the regional championships. If the Horns qualify for state with a top-four tournament showing, they'll advance to the state championships Nov. 5 at Cave Creek Golf Course.
The girls cross country team, which does not have the minimum number of five runners, will not be eligible for a team score or seed to state.
The boys, however, have three runners -- Carlan Pontious, David Cluff and Carlos Lopez -- who have a good shot at medaling (top-10) at regionals.
The 1A-3A fall soccer league, in which Payson participates, does not hold regional tournaments.
Rather, the results of the regular season were used to seed the teams into a state showdown that begins Oct. 28 at Tempe Sports Complex, Kiwanis Park at 8401 S. Hardy in Tempe.
As the East region's No. 5 finisher, the Lady Horns drew East region champion Blue Ridge in the opener. Game time is 3 p.m. on field No. 1.
If the Lady Horns can pull off the surprise of the year and beat BR, they'll play at 3 p.m. Oct. 29 against the winner of a first round game between West No. 2 Camp Verde and East No. 3 Snowflake.
The state championship will be played at 4 p.m. Nov. 5 at Mesa Community College.
The boys soccer team did not earn a seed to state.
