Safeway grocery stores statewide kick off their Holiday Food and Diaper Drive on Nov. 1, but collecting food for those in need is something Payson Safeway has done for years.
"We always donate our day-old bakery products to the Food Bank," said local Safeway manager Dan Dillon. "Now we just put some advertising on it to get them ready for Thanksgiving."
All food donated in Payson goes directly to the local food bank, he said. The food bank likes to pick up for Thanksgiving bags by Nov. 20 or 21.
As low-income families with babies find it more difficult to make ends meet, this year's drive includes diapers as well.
"More than half of the clients served by food banks are children and the elderly," said Ginny Hildebrand, executive director, Association of Arizona Food Banks.
"We just want to get the word out to our customers," Dillon said.
The holiday food drive will continue through Dec. 20.
