Aspiring football players 8 to 15 years old will have the opportunity Sept. 16 to showcase their gridiron skills in a national competition and watch the Longhorns' home opener against the Holbrook Roadrunners.
Action tips off at 5 p.m. on the Payson High School baseball field with the annual NFL Pepsi Youth Punt, Pass and Kick competition.
All participants will receive a ticket to the PHS football game that kicks off a 7 p.m.
The best news for parents and children is that the entire evening is free of charge.
In the Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick events, youths compete in age/sex groups -- 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15 years for boys and girls.
Each participant is allowed one punt, pass and place kick, which will be measured for distance an accuracy.
For example, if a youngsters passes the ball 100 feet, but it flies 30 feet to the right or left of the measuring tape, the score would be 100 minus 30, or 70.
Following the competition, each youngster's total for the three events is tallied. The players with the highest point totals are crowned champions.
The Payson winners earn the right to advance to the sectional championship Oct. 1 in the Northern Arizona University Skydome in Flagstaff.
The top-five point producers from sectional competitions held around the state advanced to the Arizona Cardinals team championships at Sun Devil Stadium in December.
The first four boys and girls in the team championships advance to the national finals.
Register at the town of Payson Parks and Recreation offices located at 1000 W. Country Club Drive. Registration will also be accepted on the day of the competition beginning at 4:30 p.m.
