County Creates Brochure For Cultural Attractions

Libraries and cultural attractions are the focus of a comprehensive brochure being prepared by Gila County.

"We are creating a beautiful brochure to promote libraries and cultural institutions in Gila County," Jacque Griffin, library director and assistant county manager, said.

"We have eight libraries in the county and 10 museums, as well as other cultural sights, such as the Tonto Natural Bridge and the San Carlos Cultural Center. There is no comprehensive guide currently available."

She said the 16-page booklet will be arranged geographically, starting with the sites in the Pine-Strawberry area, then going to the natural bridge, onto Payson, Tonto Basin and Roosevelt, Young, Globe-Miami, San Carlos, and finishing with Hayden.

The money -- $12,005 -- for the brochure is from a Library Services Technology Act Grant, awarded by the Arizona State Library, Archives, and Public Records, Griffin said.

The brochure will include listing location, collections and contact information so that visitors and residents can include cultural destinations in their travel plans. It will contain color photographs, a short description of collections or points of interests, along with locations, contact information and hours of operation.

Included in the Payson listings is information about the Zane Grey Cabin and the Rim Country Museum, as well as the Museum of Rim Country Archeology and the Payson Public Library.

Griffin said the brochure will be distributed to various businesses, visitor centers, chambers of commerce, libraries and partnering institutions.

Assisting the county in the development of the project is Jackie Stoklas, a graphic designer, who operates The Artful Mouse in Globe.
