Come Hear Stories About Katrina Relief Efforts

Daryl Oft, owner of Diversified Solutions, left Sept. 7 to help provide relief efforts for the Gulf Coast area devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

He and his team loaded food, water, shelter, chain saws, construction tools, generators, compressors, stuffed animals and medical supplies and headed for Ocean Springs, Miss.

Katrina relief efforts will be the topic at a free presentation at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25 and 27 at The Meeting Place.

"Our first challenge was to assess the situation and make contacts in order to move around the devastated areas," Oft said. "The National Guard presence was evident, but no other government entities were initially visible."

Oft said conditions were brutal, with no electricity or safe drinking water -- not to mention the summer heat of the south.

"The smell of rotten materials, dead animals and decaying rubbish, was everywhere," he said. "There was no discrepancy between rich or poor and very little regard to location."

Oft is holding free public presentations complete with pictures and stories. "Experience Africa and Katrina" begins at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25 and 27 at The Meeting Place, 1107 S. Beeline, #2 (next to Macky's Grill). Seating is limited.
