Merle William Roland, 79, of Payson, died Sept. 20, 2005, after a lengthy illness. He was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Scottsbluff, Neb., to Velva (Wadley) and William Roland.
He received his education in Sioux County and Scottsbluff, Neb. After high school, he took over the family ranch. He married Dorothy DeHart in Vernonia, Ore. They had three children. In 1979, Merle started wintering in Mesa, and retired from ranching in 1985.
In 1992 he married Catherine Scanlan Hess.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine of Payson and Mesa; sons Rodney (Reva) Roland of Marshallton, Iowa, and Gene (Sharon) Roland of Gering, Neb.; daughter, Denise (Larry) Fertig of Wheatland, Wyo.; step-daughters: Dawn Hess and fiancé Dan Van Buskirk of Pine, and Maureen Sergi of Kissimmee, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Jean, of Scottsbluff.
