Payson Property Taxes Actually Going Down

Editor:

On April 4, the Payson Roundup ran a Letter to the Editor that indicated the writer believes the Payson Town Council has recently raised property taxes and perhaps recently issued bonds that are being repaid by increases in property tax. During the last 10 years, the Town of Payson's total property tax rate has dropped from $ 0.5797 per $100 of assessed valuation to $0.3444. Property owners in the Town of Payson pay less than 3 percent of their total property tax bill to the Town.

The last bond issued by the Town for repayment through the property tax levy was for construction of Green Valley Park in 1996. The recent bonds issued for public safety communications and fire station remodeling are being repaid by a 0.12 percent sales tax levy that will "sunset" when the debt has been retired. Both of these bond issues were voter approved.
