Progress comes with effort and effort comes with progress, according to local yoga teacher and Reiki master Anthony Alfano.
And so it is as he watched the progress students in the Longhorn Culinary Arts program have made this year toward their dreams. He was impressed with their efforts and decided to help.
"I always thought when I wrote the (yoga) book it would be some type of fund-raiser," Alfano said.
Alfano recently published "A Philosophical Compendium for Three C Yoga." Profits from the $15 spiral-bound book will go to the Longhorn culinary program's efforts to add a commercial mixer, table and stove in place of one of the existing home-style kitchens.
Each student receives $1 for every book they sell, and $10 goes to the culinary program fund.
"The book is meant for anyone to be able to pick it up and follow the forms in it," Alfano said.
Three C yoga is a special form of American yoga, Alfano said. It is for lay aspirants who desire an accelerated yoga program.
Yoga allows practitioners to function with a more peaceful mindset in their daily lives. Currently, Alfano teaches at Gila Community College.
"The journey to peaceful achievement begins and occurs progressively when the Core of one-self, is Challenged with Concentration," reads Alfano's book.
"(These three c's) are the energizing elements to good health and nourishment for mind, body and spirit."
The Compendium has chapters on mental, spiritual, social and physical well-being. Pictures of basic poses are accompanied by a description of the pose plus benefits and hints.
For instance, the "tree posture" is done standing on the left foot with the right foot at the inside of the left thigh and the arms in one of three positions depending on the practitioner's balance. It helps strengthen the core and keep the vertebrae healthy.
"The human body is what it consumes," Alfano said. "A good balanced diet is highly recommended on the path to enjoy the many benefits of yoga."
A Mediterranean style meal that uses virgin olive oil and eggplant is an excellent example of food that is low in fat and has a high nutritional value.
A recipe for Sicilian Eggplant with Jumbo Shrimp by Cucina Paradiso chef Gerardo Moceri is also included in the yoga book.
Books can be purchased from PHS culinary students. They will also be available at the International Culinary Chef Event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12 in the Rim Country Middle School Cafeteria.
