Blood Drives Need Donors

United Blood Services is holding three separate blood drives in the Rim Country next week, and residents are needed to make the programs a success.

Two drives will be held in Payson, the first from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, April 17 at the Church of the Nazarene, 200 E. Parkway. The second blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at RTA Hospice, 511 S. Mud Springs Rd.

The third blood drive will be held in Pine from 1 to 6 p.m. April 18 in the First Baptist Church gymnasium, 4039 N. Highway 87.

The first Payson blood drive is being sponsored by Zane Grey Kiwanis and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. For an appointment, call Bob Hibbert at (928) 468-2234, or go online to bloodhero.com (sponsor code: payson).

To make an appointment to donate at the second drive, contact Ione at RTA Hospice, (928) 472-6340.

Participants must bring identification. Donations will not be accepted without it.

Drink plenty of water and eat a hearty, low-fat meal before donating.

General donor qualifications

You may donate blood if you are 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, have not donated in the past eight weeks (16 weeks for double red cell donors),re healthy and are not currently taking antibiotics.

You may not donate if you:

1. Have cold or flu symptoms on the day of donation or do not feel well.

2. Have ever used a needle to take nonprescription drugs.

3. Had hepatitis after the age of 11.

4. Ever had a positive Hepatitis B or C test.

5. Are at risk of catching or spreading the AIDS virus.
