The Town of Payson is pleased to announce our third annual Payson Citizens Leadership Academy. This year's program, which we might also call Payson Local Government 101, kicks off in August and is co-sponsored by Arizona Public Service Company.
Have you ever thought about running for Town Council or serving on a board, committee or commission, but were intimidated by your lack of knowledge about Town Government? Or do you just want to learn more about your town to become a better-informed citizen? If so, the Payson Citizens Leadership Academy may be just what you've been looking for.
Beginning Aug. 17, this year's Academy will have eight classroom sessions and a facilities tour. Each session will be devoted to one or more aspect of the Town's organization.
Here is the preliminary class schedule, with most classes starting at 6 p.m. and including refreshments. Classes are held at the library community room and Town Hall.
Aug. 17: Orientation, presentations by the mayor and council members. This class offers general information about the structure of Town government. Presentations will be given by the town manager and town clerk on initiatives, referendum and recall.
Aug. 31: Fire, human resources, library
Sept. 7: Police Department
Sept. 21: Town Attorney, Parks and Recreation
Oct. 5: Finance and budget, airport
Oct. 19: Public works, water, engineering
Oct. 21: Facilities tour
Nov. 2: Planning, building, economic development
Nov. 9: Chamber of Commerce, community volunteerism, council operating procedures, boards, committees and commissions. Graduation.
Enrollment is free and open to any Payson resident 18 years of age and older and to high school seniors, but is limited to 25 participants. Applications are available at Town Hall, 303 N. Beeline, and on the Town's Web site, paysonaz.us, and are due by 5 p.m. July 14.
