If you have ever been to the Payson Humane Society animal shelter at 812 S. McLane Road, you can't help but marvel at what an excellent job staff and volunteers are doing, considering the facility. The shelter is located in an old house that was modified to become a kennel for homeless animals. The rooms are tiny cubby holes where staff and cats co-mingle. The dog kennels are basically concrete and chain link with corrugated tin between kennels. Imagine being housed in such a small kennel for months, especially when it is very cold or very hot.
But there is a light at the end of this tunnel. The humane society has now purchased adjacent land for expansion and a new, modern facility. Already volunteers have enclosed a large area of land, which is being used to get the dogs out of their kennels for daily exercise. This is a tremendous step forward in helping to preserve the dogs' sanity. Now what is needed is help in the form of donations, grant writing, and other expertise to move forward with the building of the new facility. If you would like to help in this effort, please call 474-5590.
Here are some of our wonderful adoptable pets.
Girlie is a lovely 10-year-old spayed female, dark-velvet tortoiseshell cat. She is the dearest, most affectionate cat ever. Her beloved caretaker went to heaven and Girlie was brought to our shelter. We know cats aren't supposed to cry, but we are certain we saw tears in Girlie's eyes. She is quite an amazing cat, for she has traveled extensively with her lady friend to places all over the world. She even has a kitty passport. She hopes she can pick up the pieces of her life and start anew with someone as wonderful as her mistress was. Till then, she finds solace in hiding under a blanket till someone comes to admire her.
Oakley is a 5-month-old neutered male Australian shepherd mix puppy. He has a short coat of many colors and dapper white paws. He is a real loverboy and likes to lean into you when he stands next to you. For such a young dog, he is very responsive and comes when called because he loves being with people. He enjoys frolicking with other dogs and playing with toys in the dog exercise area. This pup has a happy-go-lucky personality that makes him very adaptable. Oakley is a cutie pie.
Dakota is a 5-year-old spayed female red chow. She is shaped just like a German Shepherd, but her rich copper color bespeaks chow. She is a very pleasant dog to work with, be it taking a walk on leash or just sitting by your side. She is gentle and obeys well. She gets along with other dogs, provided they aren't obnoxious and don't jump on her. She would make a wonderful companion for the right person.
Winston is a 5-year-old neutered male boxer mix. He is just a dear boy, so well-mannered and biddable. He walks like a gentleman on leash and stays right by your side. He is a good-natured fellow who loves to be with people and gets along well with other dogs. Winston loves to play in water, especially from the hose.
Missy is a 1-year-old spayed female long-haired gray tabby cat. She is a very sweet, loving coquettish kitty who is always alert and watching people who come into our shelter, hoping they will notice her pretty form and her plush fur coat.
