Lady Horns take meet by one point

Lady Longhorn track and field team members breathed a huge sigh of relief when the final scores of an April 25 four-way meet were posted.
A final tally that showed the Lady Horns were victorious by a single point prompted the gasp.
Lady Longhorn Jenna Robertson ran her way to second place finishes in the 100 and 300 hurdles in a four way meet held April 25.
In one of the most hotly contested meets ever held in Longhorn stadium, Payson posted 70 points, Chino Valley had 69, Show Low racked up 56.5 and Mogollon tallied 50.5.
The victory was the first multi-team meet win for the Lady Longhorns this season.
Much of the credit for the narrow triumph goes to the four individual first place finishers and the 4x100 relay team that ran its way to a gold.
On the team that turned in a respectable, but not state qualifying time of 53.97 were Amy Buckner, Alesha Huddlestun, Janet Echols and Nikki DeWees.
For the foursome to earn an outside qualifying berth into the state meet, they'll need to improve their time to 52.69 before the 3A finals are held May 12 and 13 at Mesa High School.
If the team cannot achieve the qualifying standard, they could advance to state by finishing in the top four at the East Region championships May 5 and 6 in Snowflake.
Also finishing first in the April 25 meet were Sierra Sommars, Lana Cluff, Shanna Coleman and Kayla O'Donnell.
Sommars won the discus with a heave of 114 feet, 11 inches and Cluff took the 800-meter title touring the two laps in 2:46.90.
Coleman soared 8 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault and O'Donnell uncorked a throw of 32 feet, 4 inches in the shot put.
