Sprints Turn Golden For Phs Speedster

Todd Kreimeyer turned in a track and field performance most prep athletes only dream about.

In a four-way meet April 25 on Payson High School field, the senior speedster turned in his finest performance of the season, running his way to three gold medals.

A Longhorn trackster is up and away in the long jump event. Action took place at a four-way meet held April 25 on PHS track.

In the 100, his winning time of 11:03 easily broke the 3A state qualifying mark of 11:59. His first place clocking in the 200 meters of 22:57 also bested the state standard of 23:48.

Kreimeyer wrapped up his highly successful afternoon by anchoring the 4x100 relay team to a first place showing in 3:39.63. On the foursome with Kreimeyer were Brandon Echols, Nate Doyle and Joe Blackburn.

Freshman Nick Goodman also had a banner day, breaking the school freshman pole vault record soaring over the bar at 11 feet, 6 inches.

Bo Althoff, now Goodman's vaulting coach, set the previous freshman mark of 11 feet in 1987.

Setting records is becoming old hat for Goodman. Only last week, he vaulted 10 feet 6 inches to tie the Payson Rotarian Invitational Track and Field standard.

Also for Payson in the meet, sophomore Troy Brown won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches, Brian Schwind captured the long jump soaring 21 feet and Robert Walker took first in the 200-meter hurdles in 43.44.

Echols stamped himself a potential state qualifier in the 400 meters by winning the event in 53.38

The 4x400 relay team of Bryson Addington, Carlos Lopez, David Cluff and Carlan Pontious legged out a win in 3:39.63.

The performances of the gold medalists fueled the Longhorns to a meet championship with 105 points. Chino Valley (94) was second and Show Low (51) third.

The Horns return to action today, Friday, at the Winslow Bulldog Invitational.

Also on the agenda are the East region championships May 5 and 6 in Snowflake and the 3A state finals May 12 and 13 at Mesa High School.
