A joint effort of the Tonto Apache Tribe and a group of parents allowed members of three local basketball teams to enjoy the thrill of a lifetime.

The hoop squads traveled to Las Vegas, Nev. in mid-July where they participated in the prestigious Superstars Swoosh Challenge 2006 tournament.

Joe LaSalandra, the coach of the junior varsity team that participated, credits the tribal council and the parents for "paying for all registration fees and lodging and well as helping raise money for transportation."

In particular, he cited "Lanell Hooke and Pamela Siverson as instrumental in making it all happen."

Payson's varsity entry in the shootout competed in the High School Boys Gold Division and finished third posting a 3-2 record over the course of four days.

Mike Addington coached the team.

In the High School Boys division, the Payson jayvees also were third with a 3-2 mark.

Payson's eighth grade entry coaching by Harding Hooke was 2-3 and seventh in pool B.
