It may seem a little late, but we would like to take a moment to recognize our Payson Little League All-Stars who represented our town recently in a bid for state.
We didn't want the chance to slip by without letting the team know that we were watching from our posts at the newspaper. We were cheering for you. And even though you lost your place in the state tournament by a hair, what we noticed was the good sportsmanship you showed, even though you must have been disappointed.
Your behavior, we believe, is a reflection of the young families in our town and the way they have chosen to raise their children.
Little League shows the importance of parent involvement in the character building of our youth and, by extension, our community.
Our team was one of three teams vying for the spot at state and Little League officials said the finish was one of the closest in Arizona tournament history.
As competitive as the state tournament turned out to be, Payson wrapped up play with the finest showing ever turned in by a Rim Country 9- and 10-year-old All-Star team.
It isn't often that an entire town gets to rally around the accomplishments of a group of 9- and 10-year-olds, but there we were, busy adults, watching you outscore all your rivals. We passed each other in the grocery store and quoted the latest score to each other.
It was fun to be a witness to your success and we want thank you for giving us that chance.
We're already looking forward to next year.
Until then, we'll turn our attention to the Longhorns and the vicarious thrill that comes from watching our high school teams lead us through a great season.
