Truck Strikes Rodeo Parade Judge's Stand

Just before 5 p.m. Friday evening a pickup truck went off the road and slammed into the judge's stand that was set up for the annual August Doin's rodeo parade along Highway 87 in Payson.

The portable stage was stationed alongside State Route 87 in front of the Inn of Payson at 801 N. Beeline Highway.

According to witnesses, it appeared the driver of a southbound commercial pickup fell asleep and crossed over oncoming lanes.

When the pickup struck the stage the impact sent the platform rolling west across the highway where it stopped after going halfway over the opposite curb. The roof of the platform remained on the east side of the roadway.

After bouncing off the judge's stand, the pickup then struck a tractor trailer parked in the hotel parking lot.

The driver of the pickup was airlifted to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn.

The rodeo parade will proceed down Highway 87 at 9 a.m. Saturday.
