Despite the fact that areas of the national forest in Gila County have been designated as "roadless," some management activity must still take place.
The U.S. Forest Service is asking states for input on this management activity. The deadline is November, and comments from the public and counties are being accepted until Aug. 31.
All three members of the Gila County Board of Supervisors will be working with Larry Stephenson, director of the Eastern Arizona Counties Organization, to draft comments to submit to the governor by the end of August.
Since July, the Arizona Game and Fish Department has conducted public hearings around the state to gather comments to help Gov. Janet Napolitano develop Arizona's proposals. Initially, the roadless area rules would prohibit new road construction and development. The courts intervened and the revised.
