The Payson area has so many amazing hikes, it's easy to forget the rest of Arizona. This weekend, take a trip out of your comfort zone and drive an hour to Sedona.
If you've never hiked in the Sedona area before, the best trail to get you started (and addicted) is the six-mile round trip West Fork of Oak Creek trail. Since this is one of the most popular hikes in the Sedona area, leave Payson no later than 7 a.m. The earlier you begin, the better your chances or finishing your hike by the time the crowds arrive. This is a perfect family hike, because the trail is level, shaded and you don't have to go far to find a child-size swimming hole. The West Fork trailhead is well marked near milepost 385 on Highway 89 between Sedona and Flagstaff.
