Body Shop Owner Was 'Born To Paint'

Lance Stacklie was born to paint. As a boy he was always painting his wagons, bikes and go-carts.

Then, when he was 16, his father dropped him off at the body shop and said, "There you go."

Lance Stacklie is no stranger to the Rim Country. Before opening his own business "Paint by Lance," residents may have met him at Chapman Auto Center or B&B Classic Auto Repair.

The owner of the shop was a friend of his fathers, Stacklie said, and the two of them had arranged for him to have a job in the body shop.

He said, of the most surprising lesson he learned while training in the trade, "It's a labor of love and it's a lot of work if you do it right."

Stacklie opened Paint by Lance in the Payson Airport Industrial Park in September 2005. He has been in the Rim Country since 1999 and decided the time was right for him to get out on his own.

He admits the venture has been challenging, but he has been gratified by the number of people who have sought out his work.

"Almost right away, I was busy," he said. He remains busy today, working with clients from all over the Rim Country and even some from out of the area.

"I had a shop in Kingman for eight years and some of those customers have been in touch to have me do work for them."

He said a basic paint job with a minimum of bodywork will take about three days.

Stacklie does free estimates and welcomes collision, custom paint, restoration and insurance work.

He has a Techbase Paint Mixing Bank that can match color and provides a base and clear coat system. He also will do tri-coat work which involves putting on the base coat, letting it dry, adding a pearlizing top coat, then finishing with a clear coat.

His facility, at 1506 W. Bravo Taxiway #1, is large enough to handle motor coaches. Most projects take from three days to a week to complete, depending on the necessary bodywork and type of paint job a customer wants.

"It's rewarding to be doing my own thing and run my own shop," he said. "And it's great to keep my customers happy."

While running his own business does not give Stacklie much free time, what he has is spent with his 7-year-old daughter, of whom the single father has sole custody.

Paint by Lance, at 1506 W. Bravo Taxiway #11, in Payson, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
