Middle School Wrestlers Grapple To Top Four

A foursome of Rim Country Middle School Maverick Wrestlers grappled their way to top-four finishes at the White Mountain League championships.

The 16-team meet was held Dec. 9 in the new Snowflake High School gymnasium.

The RCMS medal winners included Bubba Nielson, Jed Ward, Matt Schruer and Ben Lee.

Ben Lee turned in best effort among the Maverick contingent in the 104-pound class. Battling against the top wrestlers in the league, Lee emerged from the day long meet as the undefeated weight division champion.

Lee is the younger brother of former Longhorn mat stars Nate and Zach Lee.

In the 68-pound class, Nielson managed a fourth place finish. Schruer took second in the 73-pound division and Ward was fourth among the 98-pounders. The efforts of the four propelled RCMS to a ninth-place finish in the 11-team field.

Blue Ridge won the White Mountain League team championship posting 220 points. St. Johns, which finished second with 207 points, entered the championships as the regular season first place team but was nipped by BR. With 195 points, Mogollon was third and Snowflake took fourth with 179 points.

With the White Mountain League season at an end, the middle school/junior high students will turn their attention to boys and girls basketball, which will tip off after the Christmas holidays.

The 2006-2007 season wraps up in the spring with track and field.
