On Thursday, the Payson Longhorns made the trip to Holbrook High School to wrestle two 3A East foes, the Alchesay Falcons and the Holbrook Roadrunners. In a heated battle, the Payson squad came up two points short, 34-32. Holbrook and Payson have had a healthy rivalry on the mat and this dual will be another chapter of the ongoing saga.

Winners for the Longhorns were Ben Sandoval at 119, Isaac Cluff at 140, Porter Wilbanks at 145, Mark McCarty at 152, Zach Rodgers at 171, Brian Burke at 215, and Oscar Chavez at Heavyweight.

This is the only 3A East dual meet loss for Payson who now sports a conference mark of 4-1.

The conference tournament in February will likely be between these two wrestling powers.

That same night, the Longhorns defeated Alchesay 81-0, Chino Valley 72-0, and Joseph City 64-19.

In the match against the Alchesay Falcons, Kyle Leonard, at 135, recorded a first period pin, which was the highlight of the dual. Leonard is an ever-improving middleweight who will help the squad during the second half of the season.

Jan. 3 is the next dual meet action against Marana Mountain View at 1 p.m. in Tucson.
