The Arizona Wildlife Federation will sponsor its second annual Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) winter workshop Feb. 2 to Feb. 4 at Saguaro Lake Ranch.

The historical resort-style retreat, located in the Tonto National Forest in the heart of the Arizona Sonoran Desert, will feature numerous fishing opportunities for beginning and intermediate anglers, including bass fishing with bass pro Chad Witty, bow-fishing with world-class archer Kathy Green and fly fishing instruction from the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Desert Fly Casters.

The retreat will also feature a varmint call stand, field archery, natural history of the desert, canoeing and kayaking, Dutch oven cooking, and sessions on hunting desert critters like javelina and Coues deer.

For those who feel the need to explore, there will be hiking, photography and horseback rides for everyone.

The Arizona Audubon Society will also be there pointing out a variety of birds, both winter visitors and native species.

The cost is $420, which includes a horseback ride, instruction, program materials, use of equipment, deluxe lodging and meals Friday evening through noon on Sunday.

Details of class descriptions and registration materials can be found at azwildlife.org or by calling (480) 644-0077.

Meet ‘Mr. Arizona'

In the January-February issue of the department's Arizona Wildlife Views magazine, we introduce readers to Bob Beasley, one of Arizona's first game wardens, and explain how he earned the nickname "Mr. Arizona."

We also explore the fascinating menu choices of cannibalistic animals, and spend a year watching wildlife at Tavasci Marsh.
