Veryl Lionel Gale Kaufmann, 70, of Payson and formerly of the Cochrane, Wis. area, died Feb. 15, 2006 of cancer, surrounded by his immediate family. He was born June 26, 1935 to Wilfred and Martha (Wibel) Kaufmann, the second of six children.
Mr. Kaufmann attended elementary and high school at Cochrane, Wis. He married Pearl Hopf of Alma, and they had three children.
After moving to Altura, Minn., he operated Veryl's PureOil Station.
In 1964, the family moved to Mesa, where Mr. Kaufmann started his own tool-and-die business. He made precision parts for GE, Motorola and various other companies, including parts for the Blackhawk helicopters.
Mr. Kaufmann's first marriage ended in divorce. He married Donna Steele on Oct. 28, 1978, and the couple moved to Payson. The couple divorced in 2003, but remained friends.
He is survived by his friend and caregiver, Nancy Taylor; sons, Ron (Rose) of Cornville, Ariz. and Daryl (Kristi) of Florence, Mont.; daughter, Terri Gudmundson of Phoenix; step-children, Kenny Lutz of Phoenix, Bill (Louise) Lutz of Kearney, John Lutz of Phoenix and Nanette (Kevin) Kenyon of Phoenix; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Delanie (Robert) Stolpa, Marlene (Walter, Sr.) Stolpa of LaCrosse, Wis., Sheila (Roger) James of Galesville, Wis. and Karen (Rodney) Bagniewski of Fountain City, Wis.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Wayne; and one grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20 at Messinger Payson Funeral Home, 302 W. Aero Dr.
