A Few Warnings And A Recipe For A Yummy Treat

I would guess that just about everyone in Tonto Village bought at least one lottery ticket for the biggest Powerball jackpot ever. Unfortunately, no one from our area won any money. The winner(s) were just announced on television. There were eight winners from Lincoln, Neb. They were all workers at a meat packing plant. There are now eight new millionaires. They will each receive about $22 million. Oh well, maybe one of us will win next time.

Fire danger high

There is still no rain or snow for the high country. The dry condition of our forest is getting very serious. I called our local Forest Service this morning and was told that there have been no restrictions imposed as of today. I cannot impress on everyone enough to be extra careful with any type of fire and to spread the word to anyone and everyone of the extreme fire danger. Within Tonto Village, there are fire restrictions. The Red Flag is up and in effect, which means no fires of any kind will be allowed within the village, and, of course, no smoking anywhere outdoors. Smoking will only be allowed within buildings and in your vehicle using the ashtray.

Watchful eye

There have been several break-ins of unoccupied cabins at Thompson Draw I and in the surrounding area. I talked with Detective Havey of the Gila County Sheriff's Office this morning and he advises everyone to keep a "high level of awareness" and to report any unusual nighttime activity or noises that seem suspicious. Both Detective Havey and Detective Ratliff are in charge of the investigation and they can be reached at (928) 474-2208 if you have any information.

I received a letter from Patricia Johnson of Payson last week. Patricia wrote to tell me that there is a variation of the graham cracker recipe that was in my column a few weeks ago that she has made for years.

The recipe is called "Kansas Pralines" and Patricia tells me that her sister in Mesa calls them "Better Than Sex" cookies.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2 sticks of butter

1/2 cup plus two tablespoons brown sugar

Cream together and bring to a boil over medium heat.

Place graham cracker sections on a jelly roll pan sprayed with Pam.

Pour mixture over graham crackers and sprinkle with pecan pieces. Bake for 10 minutes. (It will be bubbly.)

To make them even better, sprinkle with mini chocolate chips after baking. Patricia says they are sinful.

Thank you for this variation, Patricia. I am positive there will be many gals out there who will give this recipe a try.

Birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

This last week in February is a quiet one for birthdays. I have none recorded. On March 1, however, Gary and Joan Norem of Tonto Village III will celebrate their wedding anniversary. Joan and Gary spend as much time as possible in the village, and when they do, they are active in the fund-raisers for our fire department. Happy anniversary to you.

Phil Davenport is still in the hospital in Scottsdale, but he is improving slowly. If you would like to give him a get well card, Ethel Cain at the Double D Restaurant will collect them and give them to Phil's wife, Jan. Phil will be happy to know that people are thinking of him.

Pool results

A Tonto Village sweep hit the pool tables this past Tuesday evening when the gals gathered for the nine-ball tournament. Betty Koutz, Ethel Cain and Kara Shaw took the top three spots. Way to go, gals.

The eight-ball tournament held on Sunday afternoon was won by Harvey Poyner, for the second time. Cliff Landrum and Joe Fierriera shot for the second- and third-place winner slots. Congratulations to all the winners.
