The residents of Geronimo Estates were very concerned when the February Fire came within a mile of the little community. They were told to be ready for evacuation one night as the winds were expected to pick up and possibly push the fire in their direction. The residents of Geronimo Estates were very lucky that the winds did not pick up and there was no need to evacuate.

The fire, which was first sighted on Feb. 6, burned 4,243 acres close to Geronimo Boy Scout Camp and Bray Creek Ranch and is believed to be human caused.

Whispering Pines Fire Chief Mark Essary, left, presents EMT Steve Stevens with Firefighter of the Year for 2005 as Engineer Van Herrick, the 2004 Firefighter of the Year, awaits his turn to congratulate him.

Whispering Pines Fire Department personnel patrolled the District during the fire, to keep a look out for more fires and inform residents on the status of the fire.

Forest Rangers are patrolling the Control Road and keeping people away from the burn area as crews are still mopping up.

Please drive with care on the Control Road. There is still a lot of heavy equipment to watch out for.

Thanks to all of the Firefighters who worked day and night to contain the fire before it destroyed any structures. If you see a firefighter, say, "Thank you." They were there for all of us and we should let them know how much we appreciate them.
