Robert Harry Barnes, 72, of Payson, died Jan. 3, 2006. He was born Aug. 8, 1933 in Milwaukee, Wis. to Dr. Harry A. Barnes and Inis I. Barnes.
He grew up in Terre Haute, Ind., Flagstaff and Phoenix. He received his undergraduate degree in education from Northern Arizona University and his master's in education administration from Arizona State University. He played basketball and baseball and was in the Navy Reserves after high school.
Mr. Barnes taught in Tucson, Phoenix and Alaska and worked for the Arizona and Alaska highway departments during the summer. He moved to Alaska in 1962. He married Nancy Stephens in 1963.
In 1995, Mr. Barnes returned to Arizona, and he moved to Payson in 1996.
He is survived by his sister, Betty Barnes Morgan; former wife, Nancy Stephens Barnes; son, Stephen Robert Barnes; daughter, Karen Lowell Barnes; granddaughter, Alexa Gabrielle Barnes; grandson, Tristan Stephen Barnes; daughter-in-law, Erica Kienzle-Barnes; and brother-in-law, Philip Morgan.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 at Ponderosa Baptist Church, 1800 N. Beeline Highway in Payson.
