A popular cooling off spot turned into a Rim Country hot spot Saturday morning. Poolside was the place to be when swimmers from Camp Verde and Payson met at Taylor Pool and found themselves locked in heated competition to see who was the best.
With friends, parents and grandparents looking on, swimmers from seven to 18 years of age and representing both towns battled in the backstroke, freestyle, butterfly and breast stroke events. Some also competed in a medley relay in which they had to perform all the strokes.
There were no winners or losers at this meet. Because swimming at this level is recreational, not competitive, no team results are kept.
The season continues July 8 with the inaugural Payson Parks and Recreation-sponsored sprint triathlon, which will feature a youth division that swim team members are encouraged to enter.
It will include a 200-yard swim, three-mile bike ride and a 1.5-mile run. Action continues July 15 at Taylor against Sedona and July 22 vs. Cottonwood, also at Taylor.
All dual meets tip off at 8 a.m. The campaign wraps up July 21 with the annual awards ceremony and open swim. The ceremony and a picnic will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in a Rumsey Park ramada.
The swim team, which is coached by Wendy Ward, Susan Hall and Melanie McLaws, practices weekday mornings at Taylor Pool.
The Payson swim team was founded about 20 years ago by former Taylor Pool manager Jim Quinlan.
