Musicians John and Lu Carpino will host a benefit for the St. Vincent de Paul/Payson Food Bank Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. The duo will feature original material from John Carpino's three CD releases, "Come So Far," "A Heart in the Rain" and "Evolution."

"We're trying to make people aware that hunger exists during the summertime," Lu Carpino said. According to the Association of Arizona Food Banks, in 2004, Gila County residents accepted nearly 600,000 pounds of food.

Children and seniors receive the most benefit from these programs. Forty-one percent of food-bank donations are distributed between these populations.

"People come on hard times," John Carpino said. "The food bank does wonderful things to support that effort."

The benefit begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 7 at Fireside Espresso, 614 N. Beeline Highway.

The Carpinos lauded the coffee shop for its family-oriented, non-smoking atmosphere.

Although admission is free, the duo asks patrons to bring canned goods or non-perishable food. They also accept cash donations.

"St. Vincent de Paul is such an awesome organization," Lu Carpino said. "It's nondenominational and it's here to serve the needs of everyone."

Proceeds from CD sales will benefit the food bank.
