Mary McMullen brings a wealth of athletic and sports experience to her new job as the Town of Payson Recreation Coordinator.

After starring in high schools sports in Paradise, California, she accepted a track and field scholarship to the University of Washington where she remained for two years before transferring to the University of California at Davis. There, she continued her high jumping career for the Cal track team.

It was at U. of C. that she met her husband, Craig, who is a local Arizona Game and Fish Wildlife Manager and the current Payson Little League All-Star coach.

The McMullens have two sons, Nick, 10 and Nate, 6. Nick is a member of the Little League all stars and was a local and regional champion in the Pepsi, Pitch Hit and Run competition.

Mary said her involvement in local youths sports, with her husband sons, gives her unique insights in P&R-sponsored and other athletic activities.

Prior to accepting the job as recreation coordinator, she worked for a year as the Wellness Center coordinator at Gila Community College.

As town rec coordinator she will be responsible for scheduling, conducting and overseeing most all youth and adult sports including the home run derby, Pepsi Pitch, Hit and Run, Hershey Track and Field and Punt, Pass and Kick.

McMullen said she was not planning on making any changes in current programs and would instead focus on learning the nuances of her new position. "After a while we'll evaluate and see if any (changes) are needed," she said.

McMullen can be reached at (928) 474-5242, ext 358.
