August is the regal month named for Caesar Augustus. It's a laid-back kind of month, notable for Lazy Day on the 10th and National Relaxation Day on the 15th. It also has a few special days dear to my heart: Friendship Day on Aug. 6, International Left-Hander's Day on the 13th and National Thrift Store Day on Aug. 17.
Being left-handed myself, I advocate an all-out celebration on the 13th, beginning with left-handed people having the day off. That in itself would probably shut down half of Payson, where there seems to be a disproportionate number of lefties.
Figures vary, but it is postulated that the percentage of left-handed people to the general population is somewhere between 13 and 30 percent.
The term "southpaw" for lefties is a baseball term. At one time, most baseball parks were constructed so the setting sun was behind home plate. The left-handed pitcher's throwing arm would then be toward the south as he faced the batter.
Did you know that most playing cards are right-handed? Standard cards must be fanned in a right-hand manner for all the numbers to be visible. In a left-handed deck, the numbers appear on all four corners of the cards.
Yes, there really are such things, available from companies that specialize in merchandise for left-handed people.
