Otis Henry Garnand, 92, of Payson and Phoenix, died May 30, 2006. He was born on April 25, 1914 to Judson and Mabel Garnand in Spickard, Mo.
In the middle of the Great Depression, he hopped into the rumble seat of a westbound Model A Ford and landed in Phoenix, where he first worked in the citrus groves. By 1936, he had married Elaine O'Donnell, his wife of 69 years. He had also already embarked on his long and successful career in the automotive aftermarket. He got his start sweeping floors and changing tires at Rudolph Chevrolet, but soon transferred to the parts department. He left the dealership to manage the Phoenix Motor Company, and there met Lester Holmes.
In 1947, he joined Holmes in starting up the Auto Parts Company (APCO), an independent chain he owned and operated for 40 years. After retirement in 1986, he divided his time between Phoenix and Payson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa Elaine Garnand, in 2005 and by his sisters, Ruby Tysor and Francis McMackin.
He is survived by his brother, Harold; by his sister-in-law, Jane "Connie" (and Carroll) Blackman; by his son, J. Otis (and Lynda) Garnand; and his daughter Margaret (and Roger) Venturi; by his grandchildren, Brien Garnand, Karen Keese, William Otis Keese, Debora Allen, James Garnand, Wyatt Garnand, James Keese, Sean Garnand, John Keese, and Sara Murphy; by his step-grandchildren Teresa Venturi and Gina McCarthy; by his great-grandchildren, Victoria, Hannah and Naomi Allen, Caden Keese, Lucas and Madelyn Garnand, Megan Murphy, Nicolas and Emma Garnand, Kyla Murphy, Molly and Timothy Garnand.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 2, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd. in Phoenix.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home. Interment to follow at St. Francis Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to RTA Hospice, 511 S. Mud Springs Road, Payson, AZ 85541.
