Increased smoking and campfire restrictions and area closures on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest were initiated Saturday morning, June 17.
Campfires and the use of charcoal are prohibited everywhere in Arizona national forests, including developed campgrounds, at all times, until summer rains begin and the restriction order is lifted. Smoking is restricted to inside buildings or vehicles. Gas-powered stoves, heaters, lanterns and fireplaces meeting safety specifications are allowed both within and outside developed recreation sites.
There are 12 areas of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest that are closed to all public entry.
Due to fire danger, the Coconino National Forest will also be closed as of Friday. All trails and all lakes, including Lake Mary, Ashurst Lake, Blue Ridge Reservoir and Stoneman Lake, are off limits.
