June Was Busy Month For Firefighters

It is hard to believe that June is now history and I will be writing my next column in July.

Tonto Village Fire District News

The month has turned out to be a very busy month in more ways than one.

The fire season for the month has been a busy one for the Tonto Village Fire Department. Not only were they on standby for the tanker fire last week, there was a lightning-caused fire in the Dude Fire burn area near Ellison Creek last Monday, June 19. It was taken care of very quickly by the Forest Service with the help of four air tankers and two helicopters.

The Tonto Village Fire Department was on standby with their water trucks and stayed on scene for a number of hours.

A big thank-you to all the volunteer firemen and the Forest Service for making quick work of the fire.

Incidentally, during the tanker fire on Highway 260, the Creekside Restaurant in Christopher Creek provided food for the firefighters.

Thank-you to Olive Matus and your kitchen crew for your generosity.

The auxiliary to the Tonto Village Fire Department will hold its monthly meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 6 at the Tonto Village Chapel. The new by-laws will be discussed and voted on along with plans for the annual Labor Day Bash.

Everyone in the district is invited to attend.

Collins Ranch

I received an e-mail from Tim Ehrhardt this past week. Tim reported that Rob Adams and his wife Jill invited many of their friends from the Valley to get out of the heat and enjoy the cooler weather in the pines last weekend.

They all had a grand time together and Tim thanks Rob and Jill for being such great neighbors.

Tim also told me that he has done some historic research of the area, and he says that the Collins Ranch area was originally part of the Boles Homestead, homesteaded by Sampson Elam Boles in 1909.

We will get together soon to discuss the history of the area.

Tonto Village Chapel

A reminder of Vacation Bible School set for July 10 through July 14.

The fun starts at 9 a.m. and continues until noon. There will be games, crafts and snacks available along with Bible lessons by very competent teachers including Rita Spalink. Rita is the coordinator and she can be reached at (928) 478-4282.

Donations of snacks and drinks will be gratefully accepted.

New grandson

Connie Weldon of Tonto Village III was blessed with her third grandchild on Sunday, June 25, when Turner Edward made his first appearance to his mom and dad, Eddie and Marlie Coria of East Mesa. Congratulations to the new parents of their first-born child and also to Grandma Connie and to Turner's great-grandparents, Clint and Grace Daniels of Tonto Village III.

Connie would like to thank Joan Norem of Tonto Village III and Josh for clearing her yard of pine cones and needles this past week. Connie is very thankful for such good neighbors and wishes to thank Joan and Josh for all their hard work.

Birthdays and anniversaries

A big congratulations to Rick and Theresa Meeker of Tonto Village II for their wedding anniversary on July 6.

This year makes 33 years of togetherness for them, and my husband Bill and I wish them many more years of being together.

Marie Coley of Tonto Village II will add another candle on her birthday cake July 3.

Kay King, Ethel Cain and Roger Boyington share July 7 for their birthday. Happy birthday to all of you.

Sad farewell

Lorraine "Bo" Mathews will be leaving the village soon for Las Vegas, Nev.

"Bo" was given a going away party this past Tuesday evening during the nine-ball pool tournament at the Double D.

We will miss you, Bo.

The winners of the tournament were Suzie Shill, Betty Koutz and Payge Ferriera.

Cliff Landrum was the winner this past Sunday afternoon at the Double D for the eight-ball games.

Betty Koutz and Margaret Stasney shot for second and third places.

Cliff is back in good form, but Betty has been pretty close to winning for a few weeks now. Maybe it is Betty's turn to take first place.

Congratulations to all the winners.
