Riley James Brunson, 88, died June 26, 2006 after a short illness. He was born to James and Elsie Brunson April 27, 1918 in Tonto Basin. He was the third of seven children.
Mr. Brunson worked for the U.S. Forest Service for about 32 years. He was stationed on the Tonto National Forest, measuring trails, fighting forest fires, building culverts and grading roads.
He served in the United States Army during World War II and was in the 120th Field Artillery Battalion, 32nd Division and was stationed in Adelaide and Brisbane, Australia, then in New Guinea and Luzon in the Philippines, earning three Bronze Stars.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Payson and later a member of the Southside Baptist Church in Tempe.
Mr. Brunson is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lorraine; his daughter, Bonnie Creighton (Kevin); stepdaughter, Carol Hill (Kevin); stepson Barry Norton; two grandsons; two step-granddaughters; and a step-grandson; his brother, Charles Brunson (Sherry); sister, Lina Stockman; sister-in-law, Joyce Brunson; seven nieces and six nephews; and a step-great-granddaughter.
Viewing was held at 9 a.m. Friday, June 30 with services following at Mountain View Mortuary Chapel, 7900 E. Main St. in Mesa.
