Mary Catherine Mitchell, of Payson, died at the age of 100 on Feb. 28, 2006, in Mesa. She was born April 27, 1905 in Hibbing, Minn.
She graduated from Hibbing High School in Hibbing, Minn. in 1921. In 1926, she graduated from the first collegiate nursing school in the nation, University of Minnesota at Minneapolis. She was head nurse in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Hospital, and also worked as a private duty nurse in Minneapolis. Mrs. Mitchell was a longtime volunteer in the Parent-Teacher Association in Milwaukee, holding many offices, including president. She was a longtime member of the Eastern Star and held the station of Worthy Matron of the Ella S. Washburn Chapter in Milwaukee in 1957. She was also active in mothers club of Jobs Daughters and a member of Payson United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Mitchell is survived by three daughters - June Rusch, Lola Wandrey and Gail Borgh - nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Vern Larsen and John Mitchell.
A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, March 3 at Messinger Payson Funeral Home, 302 W. Aero Dr. in Payson. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4 at Powell House, 806 W. Longhorn Rd. in Payson. Interment will be at Mountain Meadows Memorial Park in Payson.
