This week's featured dogs need to find homes with people who are committed to training and working with them. The prospective owners will need to understand how to be the alpha leader -- showing calm, assertive dominance while being kind and gentle with these dogs.
We recommend taking dog training classes at the shelter and also watching "The Dog Whisperer" which airs on the National Geographic Channel.
The Payson Humane Society animal shelter is located just south of Main Street at 812 S. McLane Rd. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, please call (928) 474-5590.
Fritz is a handsome 1-year-old neutered male Pitbull Terrier. He is very loving and would be a lap dog if you would let him. He likes to lean against you when he sits beside you and get his head and neck scratched. He is a perfect passenger in the car and lays his head in the driver's lap. Fritz is scared of loud noises, going to the vet and getting on the scales. His new owner will need to work at keeping him socialized, since he's so wonderful now with all the exposure he's had to a variety of people he has met at the shelter. He enjoys playing with Freckles in our large fenced area, and they would make a great pair, if you're looking for a well-matched twosome. Fritz has been getting extensive training with professional trainers while with us and has made quantum leaps in polite behavior and walking on leash. His new owners will be required to pay for and attend additional training classes held at the shelter.
Freckles is a loveable 2-year-old spayed female Pitbull Terrier mix. She is smaller than most Pitbulls and her butterball body is sprinkled with pale tan spots. Her ears are floppy like a Dalmatian's. She likes people, tummy rubs, going for walks and playing in the yard with her toys. She will need a securely fenced yard that keeps her safe at home. She is a wonderful walking companion because she is very responsive and doesn't pull at all. Freckles has a unique talent: she can sing! She has received many hours of personal training by professional dog trainers, which has paid off big time. She is so polite and can sit, lie down and stay on command. Freckles loves to play with Fritz, but doesn't care much for other female dogs. Her new owners will be required to pay for and attend additional training classes held at the shelter.
Molly is a perky, playful 2-year-old spayed female Australian Cattledog. She is pure white, except for caramel-colored markings on her head, and faint spots on her back. Her white ears are so cute with freckles all over them when viewed from behind. Molly has been a family dog and is good with children and cats, however, she needs to be the only dog in the household. She is housebroken and rides politely in the car. Molly is very easy to handle on leash and is fun to take for a walk.
Sammy is a young adult neutered male Catahoula Leopard Dog. He is such a friendly fellow and quite a happy dog. Sammy is a high-energy dog, and the key to keeping him manageable is exercise and plenty of it. He and his new owners would benefit from dog training classes. He is a great walking companion and is interested in all the scents he comes across on the trail. He would no doubt make a fantastic hunting buddy. He envisions finding a home with a family that will include him in their outdoor activities and take him for rides in their pickup truck. He is looking forward to a wonderful new life.
Princess is a 10-month-old spayed female Labrador Retriever/Rottweiler mix. She is a big, strong girl, but is gentle with children and good with male dogs. She loves to play with her toys. She's a well-behaved car passenger and walks especially nicely on leash, considering her size. She has been an outdoor family dog, so if you want to bring her inside, you will need to work with her a little. Princess will require a securely fenced yard to keep her home safe.
