Longhorn track and field team members can be excused for believing the town of Buckeye looks a lot like Wickenburg.
The mysterious mistaken identity occurred March 8 as the team bussed through Wickenburg on their way to a multi-meet.
Originally, the Horns were to be in Buckeye for the meet but when school officials canceled the clash at the last minute, coach Chuck Hardt opted to change course to Wickenburg where another meet was scheduled.
If the team was left a bit confused with their destination, it didn't show up in the final results.
The Horns ran, jumped and threw their way to a first place in the eight-team skirmish, posting 173 points. Host Wickenburg finished as the runner up with 110 points.
For Payson, Carlan Pontious led the points parade with three gold medals. The junior distance star won the 800 and 1600 meter runs and ran the third leg of the 4x800 relay.
On the team with him were David Cluff, Doug Kreimeyer and Bryson Addington.
Also for the Longhorns, Brandon Echols won the 200-meter dash and Brian Schwind leaped to the high jump title.
The relay crew of Joe Blackburn, Nate Doyle, Kreimeyer and Echols sped their way to first in the 4x100 relay.
Silver medal laurels for the Horns were garnered by Robert Walker, Troy Brown, Morgan Cassuto, Cluff and the 4x400 relay foursome of Troy Brown, Echols, Blackburn and Kreimeyer.
Cluff was second in both the 800 and 1600 meters. Walker was the runner up in the 300 hurdles. Brown took second in the high jump and Cassuto won the silver medal winner in the shot put.
On March 14, the team travels to Flagstaff to participate in the 26-team Skydome Classic. The meet is one of just two indoor competitions the Horns participate in this season. The other is March 14 at Round Valley High School in Springerville.
