John R. Duke Haley, 60, of Tempe died March 15, 2006 in Tempe. He was born June 7, 1945 in Phoenix.
Duke was raised in Payson and attended schools in Payson and Tempe. He started riding bulls at a young age, a sport that he loved and continued to participate in until 1982.
He was a member of Operator Engineers #302 out of Fairbanks, Alaska for over 30 years. He lived and worked in Arizona, Alaska, Oregon and Idaho. He married Sharon Holmes in 1967. They later divorced. Duke lived a colorful life, loved people, had a keen memory, loved to dance and be with friends.
He is survived by sons, Billy Duke Haley, and Robert Glenn Holmes; granddaughter, Skye Lyn; sister, Mary Lou (Greg) Panatopoulos; nieces and nephews: George T. Peter, Jr., Cheryl (Tim) Bennett; Jonathan H. Peter, Brady (Monica) Panatopoulos, Nicolene (Tim) Swain; stepsister, Maureen MacNeil; step-brother, Patrick Murphy, and their children; two aunts: Ruth Emlet and Donna Haley.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William O. Bill Haley and Barbara Haley Murphy; grandparents, John and Mary Haley; Raymond and Leticia Shedd; stepfather, Pat Murphy; aunts and uncles, Rose Shanley, Theresa Boardman, John, Charles, Albert, Robert and Earl Haley, Tom Martin and Ramona McPherson.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, March 25 at Messinger Funeral Home, 302 Aero Dr. in Payson, with graveside services at 11 a.m. at Payson Pioneer Cemetery, followed by a potluck and sharing of memories at the Ox Bow on Main Street.
