Payson High School athletic director Dave Bradley spent most of the district's spring break rescheduling games that had to be postponed due to the snow and rain that drenched prep playing fields around the state.
In softball, an East region opener against the Snowflake Lobos slated for March 10 has been rescheduled for 3:30 p.m. April 20 in Snowflake.
A clash originally set for March 14 vs. Holbrook will now be contested March 27 on the PHS diamond.
On March 23, the Lady Horns play Blue Ridge on the home field to make up an East contest originally scheduled for March 14.
A March 11 game against Estrella Foothills has not yet been rescheduled.
"Hopefully, there's no more cancellations," first year Lady Horn coach Curtis Johnson said.
The coach is hoping the Gracie Haught Classic set for March 24 and 25 in Payson can be played without a hitch.
"The weather is supposed to clear up; we want to get that one (the tournament) in," he said.
The snow and rain that fell last week kept the Lady Horns from playing games or practicing outdoors.
When the Lady Horns do finally play, they can be excused for being more than a bit rusty. The last time the team took the field competitively was March 7 in Fountain Hills.
During that game, Payson ruled the Falcons 11-1 behind the three-hit pitching of Candice Johnson.
In addition to allowing only a trio of hits, Johnson struck out three and didn't walk a batter.
Tiffany Klemstine relieved Johnson in the final frame and struck out two of the three batters she faced.
While Johnson and Klemstine were baffling Falcon hitters with their assortment of offerings, the Lady Horn offense was churning out 15 hits.
Ashley Anesin finished three-for-three at the plate and Candice Johnson was three-for-four.
Hilary Armenta, Jadyn Walden and Hannah Armenta pounded out two hits each.
The Haught schedule
For the Gracie Haught Classic, the 10 teams entered will play in two pools of five squads each.
Pool A includes Desert Edge, Apache Junction, Benson, Queen Creek and Payson.
In Pool B are Prescott, Chandler Basha, Florence, Blue Ridge and Many Farms.
The Lady Longhorns play March 24 at:
- Noon vs. Desert Edge at Rumsey 1
- 3 p.m. vs. Benson at Rumsey 2
- 7:30 p.m. vs. Apache Junction at Rumsey 1
March 25 pool play:
- 10:30 a.m. vs. Queen Creek at Rumsey 2
Beginning at noon on the second day of the tournament, the teams will be seeded into a single elimination tournament in which the No. 3 finishers from each pool play No. 4 from the opposite pool. In the second round, No. 2 pool finishers play No. 5 and both pool champs play the winners of No. 3 vs. No. 4.
The championship game is set for 6 p.m. at Rumsey 1.
