At the annual spring meeting of the Arizona Quilters Guild April 22, Willene Smith was honored by the executive board.

The board determined that recognition should be awarded to AQG members whose contribution has been one of long and dedicated service to the Guild, whose leadership has been a beacon for others to follow, whose willingness to give has stood the test of time, and whose efforts should not go unrewarded. This year's recipient of special recognition is Willene Smith of Strawberry, and henceforth this award shall be named in her honor.

Willene has served AQG in many capacities, including president, but most notably through the organization and continued supervision of the Arizona Department of Public Safety Program. This ongoing statewide program, initiated by Willene in 1990, distributes quilts to adults and most particularly to children in traumatic situations. Her efforts exemplify compassion and leadership and have set a standard for others to follow.

To date 3,746 trauma quilts have been delivered to DPS due to statewide participation by chapters of the Guild. Willene,s an inspiration to us all.
