The ladies at the newest salon in town, To Massage or Knot, have more than 35 years of combined experience in nail care and massage therapy.

As the name suggests, the salon offers massages, and three technicians are available to do manicures and pedicures.

Shannon James, seated, and Cozette Ridge, along with Tammy Umbenhauer (not in photo) are the team at To Massage or Knot, the area's newest salon. In June, they will be joined by Robin Weaver. The shop's specialties are massage and nail care.

The shop is owned and operated by Shannon James, who is the massage therapist.

Working with James are Cozette "Cozy" Ridge, Tammy Umbenhauer, and as of June 6, Robin Weaver.

"It's always been a dream to have my own shop," James said. "And after 12 years, I decided it was time to do it now or not do it."

James opened the shop in March. It is located in the office building just north of the Wash Tub. The location was selected for its ambiance. There are five workspaces, including one with a fireplace, plus a kitchen and bath.

"I chose it for its quiet and relaxed atmosphere," James said.

The nail technicians offer regular manicures, plus acrylic nails, gel nails and pedicures.

James offers Swedish massage, with pressure point and reflexology.

Both half-hour and hour-long sessions are available.

Additions to a massage can include:

  • A salt scrub or body buff to exfoliate the skin and increase circulation;
  • A herbal wrap where sheets soaked in herbs and heated to approximately 250 degrees are wrapped around a client's body for detoxification;
  • A mud wrap -- either seaweed mud or rose mud is applied to the body. Seaweed is another way to detoxify the body, while rose mud is a nourishing treatment.
  • Retreat for the feet features exfoliating, a mud wrap and massage with lemon peel and peppermint lotion.

James explained what to expect following a treatment, "After a detoxifying session, the client will be sleepy and thirsty, and within a couple of hours feel rejuvenated. Following a nourishing session, the client can expect to feel relaxed, soothed and hydrated."

She suggests waiting a month between treatments.

Any of the services -- manicures, nail enhancements, pedicures, massages and wraps can be combined in a package as a Mother's Day gift. Gift certificates for individual services or combination packages are also available.

To make an appointment with James, call two to three days in advance. For nail services, call three to four days in advance.
